Welcome to the Community Benefit High School Site

Serving Students in Pacifica, Daly City, Colma and Brisbane, California

History
The Community Benefit High School (CBHS) is a grass roots group of parents and community members dedicated to increasing the high school options in the Jefferson Union High School District. CBHS was formed in 2007 by a group of Jefferson Union High School District (JUHSD) parents and community members looking for additional High School options in the eastern part of the district, where Jefferson Union has no high school.

Originally named “Citizens for a Brisbane High School” for the group of Brisbane Elementary School District parents who started this effort, the name has evolved to “Community Benefit High School,” to better represent that the school will be open to everyone in the JUHSD.

Soon after formation, the CBHS group agreed that a college-preparatory school best suited their needs. Over the years, we have looked at several different charter schools, including Aspire, Envision and Metro, and finally settled on the Summit model as our school of choice.

Summit’s Model
Summit is dedicated to increasing high school graduation and college admission rates across all racial and socioeconomic groups. They accomplish this by having all students take the same classes; there is no A math class or B math class. All students take six Advanced Placement (AP) classes in their senior year. To accommodate different student learning rates, Summit employs individualized learning techniques. The teaching approach is validated by test scores, graduation rates and college admission rates. All students complete the requirements for admission to the University of California.

CBHS Accomplishments

  • In late 2011, CBHS reached out to Summit Public Schools to see if Summit had an interest in opening a public school in the JUHSD.
  • Over the last months of 2011 and the first months of 2012, we collected more than 330 signatures and 180 emails asking Summit to consider locating in Jefferson Union, during which time our parents also spoke at JUHSD Board of Trustee meetings.
  • This activism persuaded Summit in May 2012 that there was sufficient interest in JUHSD to pursue a school in Jefferson Union district.
  • CBHS has had a number of fundraisers, and we recently contributed $500 to the JUHSD parcel tax Measure Y. We fully support our public High School District.
